Ramon Vega is a Critic in the Painting Department at the Rhode Island School of Design. He earned a BFA from RISD and an MFA from the Tyler School of Art and Architecture, with support from the Odili Donald Odita Scholarship. Prior to this, he served as Creative Director at Gagosian Shop and worked with Ralph Lauren, Prada, and Comme des Garçons. Vega has exhibited nationally and internationally at venues including Temple Contemporary, Andrew Edlin Gallery, The Hole, David Zwirner Gallery, and Praz-Delavallade, and at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. His work has been featured in L’Officiel Mexico and reviewed by The New York Times.
Working across painting, collage, drawing, and installation, Vega explores identity and place through abstraction. Born in Puerto Rico and raised in New York City, he approaches abstraction as a transformative language for examining memory, perception, and the built environment. His current work engages the urban palimpsest, focusing on how architectural structures are constructed, repurposed, and experienced. Through material processes—particularly the use of polyvinyl tarps associated with labor and temporary shelter—he foregrounds repetition, accumulation, and pattern as a means of mapping place. This methodology invites reflection on how structures shape lived experience, offering alternative ways of seeing and inhabiting the environments that inform identity.
Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico
